With a title like Dread Pirate Aldo, one reminiscent of a certain character from The Princess Bride, you would expect this booklet to be serving up a spicy tale of high piracy amongst the stars. One of these is Dread Pirate Aldo, a release that supports Prime Directive, the RPG from Amarillo Design Bureau based on the publisher’s “Star Fleet Universe” setting, itself drawn from the Star Fleet Battles board game. Amongst the slew each year there will always be one or more hotly anticipated they will always be joined by regular releases that support existing games. Invariably they are tasters for forthcoming games to be released at Gen Con the following August, but others are support for existing RPGs or pieces of gaming ephemera.

There's some faces you might not recognize like Cygnians, Alpha Centaurians, Seltorians, Hydrans, and ISC. The Klingons are pretty much old school as are the Romulans. In fact you'll probably see more material that references Starfleet Marines in these books than any of the canon material.Įven though the setting is a bit different, there's some familiar faces like Vulcans, Klingons (before they got bumps on their foreheads), Romulans, Gorn, Orions, Tholians and Kzinti (they were introduced in an animated episode). Think of it as Starfleet's version of a Navy SEAL Team stationed on a starship. This is basically a special forces team that goes out on away missions and performs special boarding operations and covert insertions etc. In fact the main focus of the RPG setting is the Prime Team. You'll find the setting a bit more military oriented.

If you're not familiar with the Starfleet Universe, it's pretty much loosely based on the original series (and some bits from the 70s animation) but they're contractually cannot make any direct references to the main characters or events of the original series, the movies or any of the spin-off series, so they made a universe all to their own which is pretty much set with one war after another (which works as a good setting for a wargame like Starfleet Battles).
